Classroom Management

Good Classroom management is essential if a instructor wants to reach the students in their class. Classroom management can make or break a instructor, no matter how knowledgeable they are about their content. I have seen it done over and over again each school year. Also, without it its impossible to teach.

My first year teaching high school students was in 2006 and at that time I was given the best advice (I learned many things over the years but this was gold). On day one of school make it known what your expectations are, class rules (non negotiable), and never crack a smile the first (joke) but let them know there will be a time to play and a time to learn. Will that approach work for everybody...no. However, it works for me. After the relationships are cultivated I definitely loosen up and lifetime bonds are made.  They begin to buy into what I am teaching and understand the importance of learning. Not only do I create a relationship with my students I create a relationship with their parents.

The classroom management style I have is not for everybody. Because I care about my students like they were my own I am very stern with them. Whatever classroom management a instructor chooses is great just stay consistent and change somethings along the way.

  1. I love this. Relationship is everything and consistency is crucial. The second line here is something I wish all teachers realized....classroom management can make or break it all. Great reflection Denise. I like the way you think!
